Each entry includes the institution's overall admission rate, mid-50th percentile test scores and a link that takes you directly to the college’s Environmental Science program for more information. We've also included notes that give insight to why we believe that each institution is noteworthy.

An up-and-coming field, the term “Data Scientist” was coined as recently as 2008 and ranked the #1 Best Job in America by Glassdoor in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Studying "big data" will teach you how to ask important, real-world questions, collect data, organize information, translate results into solutions, and communicate your findings in ways that will effect positive change.

Using information compiled from U.S. News, Tech Republic, Discover Data Science, and the Data Science Degree Programs Guide, here's a list of schools with strong Data Science programs for undergrads. Some schools have a bit of information after the name indicating that the school only offers a minor, certificate program, concentration, or degree track in Data Science. Additionally, Data Science programs are called different things by different schools, including “Statistics and Data Science,” “Data Analytics,” and “Business Analytics.”

We’ve organized the schools from least to greatest admission rate, and we’ve also provided links to each school’s Data Science program to help you explore.

If you're in the hunt for merit scholarships, be sure to stay on top of explicit deadlines a school on your list might have.

In some cases, like Boston University and the University of Richmond, it's a hard deadline that you have to meet in order for you to be considered at all.  In others, like Indiana University and many other public institutions, it's a "priority" deadline that maximizes your chances of merit aid before the money runs out.  Either way, merit aid continues to be an excellent way for good students to defray the cost of an education.  

We've compiled a list of selected schools in our coverage universe with explicit deadlines, along with some stats to help you gauge the size and breadth of the institution's merit offerings.  We've also included links to each school's scholarship page for easy access to the details.

Most of these schools automatically consider you for merit scholarships without the need for an additional application.

U.S. News & World Report released their 2019 college rankings earlier today.  Over 1,800 schools were covered nationwide and evaluated on multiple measures of academic excellence and outcomes to produce the final rankings.

Social mobility indicators were added this year, while the acceptance rate was eliminated as a factor and others like expert opinions and test scores were reduced in weighting.

Princeton retains sole possession of the top spot for National Universities, and Williams College tops the list of Liberal Arts Colleges.

Forbes released its list of top ranked colleges for 2018. 

The Forbes ranking methodology is driven by alumni salary (20%), debt (20%), student experience (20%), American Leaders List (15%), academic success (12.5%) and graduation rate (12.5%).  

At the top of this year's list are:

5. Princeton
6. Caltech
7. University of Pennsylvania
8. Brown University

Here's another good read from Will Dix at Forbes—this post focuses on the need to pay attention to admission history as part of your college plan and features some of the analysis from our recent notable admission rate changes post.  We think this article reinforces the importance of staying current with admission results, as each year there are surprises like American University—where the admission rate has fallen from 45 percent to 26 percent in the span of just three admission cycles—which can materially change how schools on your list might get categorized.
